Label presents an open and creative concept that gives birth to experimental sounds
From the moment we get in touch with the name of the dsrptv rec label, it’s already possible to understand that the work they do is far from ordinary. After all, “disruptive” is an adjective used to refer to everything that breaks patterns or breaks the normal course of a process. And in the case of the label, both meanings are equally correct.
The Brazilian label was founded in early 2021, by Tha_guts and A.Cittolin, who saw in the Brazilian scene a lack of spaces for genres and works outside the House and Techno axis, especially those that are not geared towards the dancefloor. Facing a growing scenario of artists who seek consistent work in underground music, but who were not being accepted, dsrptv rec was born.
“dsrptv was created thinking exactly on what we do today: releasing artists that make music we believe in. The label’s catalog itself shows a lot of what our curatorship is, focused much more on the profile beyond the usual than necessarily on a specific genre or bpm. We also have a constant intention to propagate the music of underground artists and alternative scenes, mainly Brazilians, although we have already worked with some foreign artists.”
The label’s concept was structured from this, which consists of an open and creative space, that seeks to include in its catalog a more experimental language and artists with less orthodox productions. The central idea is to get out of the box, explore the layers – which are infinite within electronic music – and work with pieces that push the limits of e-music. It’s about being disruptive.
And that is exactly what the label has been doing since its first release, featuring the Canadian producer and multi-instrumentalist Spookyfish with the Obsculon EP, which features deep vocals, marked percussive lines, and organic elements to build a unique atmosphere.
Since then, it has been two years and more than 20 releases, which cover the most different styles and sounds, besides having in its catalog, artists from different places, but mainly bringing as a focus Brazilian artists. L_cio, Kika Deeke, Tha_guts, PR.A.DO are just some of the national names that have already presented productions signed by the label.
“The releases of the label this year are a little different from the previous year, something that becomes clear when listening to them. While today we are releasing a lot of breakbeat, electronic with funk, and more dancefloor oriented sounds, in the previous year we were working a lot with the idea of consolidating the catalog, of presenting what our label is to the public, showing that we are not tied to rigid musical concepts. This becomes clear when listening to the releases with a strong experimental vein from the beginning of our work, ranging from ambient to lo-fi hip hop.”
This unusual concept of the label also invades the aesthetic field, since even the arts that print the covers, produced by Gabriel Rolim, or just Rollinos, are different and full of personality and experimentalism. Moreover, the label’s operation and release strategy are also impacted by the proposal.
Starting with the curators, who work thinking about the cohesion of the catalog, in order to communicate concepts that do not get stuck to a specific genre, but that go beyond it. For this reason, dsrptv works with guest artists, which the headlabels, now including Palmer, select internally and then call them to develop productions to be released by the label.
Another differential are the limited edition cassette releases, which offer an interesting experience for the listener. The label’s store also features T-shirts and vinyls. “We know that the physical media has been losing its space in the mass market, but since dsrptv never intended to be a mainstream label, the idea of presenting releases on vinyl and cassette tape, the latter produced by ourselves in the label’s studio, came from the appreciation that the three partners have for this kind of format. We understand that it’s a very niche product nowadays, but even so we have a great demand when we release this kind of material. All physical releases to date have sold out quite quickly, which is a great motivation for us to keep betting on this.”
Starting its third year, the proposal is reinforced, with dsrptv seeking to further expand its differentiated catalog. Starting with the most recent release, Golden Kong‘s EP “TD-N55”, which arrived on the platforms on March 3rd, exploring styles ranging from Electro to Techno to Funk.
And they still have big plans for the year: “The major project of this year is for sure the release of the VA in partnership with the label Nice & Deadly, from Brasília. Each label will fill one “side” of the VA with guest artists, focusing on dancefloor sounds. It will be a blast!”
