After his last single, La presión de mejorar (created with Niña Tormenta), and the lively album Investigaciones Sobre Ciclos y Secuencias, Pol del Sur released Minimalismo en Sudamérica. It is released in April, loaded with a reflection about existential void, excess and the metaphysical aspect of the societies we live in. It is precisely this work the one that marks the beginning of South Plug’s path as a Management and Booking space for artists. From this moment, this area is added to the platform’s work.
In his new composition, the Chilean musician and producer (Estudios Triana) goes deep into minimalist and orthodox electronic music, shaping his work into hypnotic sequences and lyrics that serve as life manifests. “We are facing the emptiness of the spirit, no rites, no connection with the metaphysical dimension of the world, without any convictions or real epics, without sacrifices,” states Pol. At Estudios Triana, he has worked with Javiera Mena, Gepe, Diego Lorenzini, among other bands and musicians.
In this context, Minimalismo en Sudamérica can be understood as a connection with the primary default affliction of the human being on Earth and the different expressions that it brings forth. This also carries the opposite: our society vanished from genuine thought and feeling, anesthetized by excess and consumerism. “The EP is elaborated from the reflection on the material and emotional overflow commonly found in our society. This goes from the obsession with comfort at all costs, to the ever-changing moral of everyday pamphlets. Precisely, the EP’s title refers to the minimal as if it were a place, or a forgotten idea from another era found ironically in South America. This continent has been beaten up with no mercy by the first world industries, and it’s culture encrypted in a sort of imported excess that is now considered to be common”, Pol says. Minimalismo en Sudamérica is, in this way, a resistance to the shallow alienation the previous statement entails. A simultaneous irony and utopia.
The EP’s five tracks travel from the ‘70s Krautrock to contemplative Ambient, going through variations reminiscent of European Minimal Wave. Contrary to mainstream electronic music nowadays, every track possesses lyrics that reflect on the fields of social behavior, and it’s morals.
