French-Cameroonian artist Tatyana Jane has released her long-awaited EP “Elixyr”, a work that transports you through diverse and enveloping soundscapes. Produced entirely in her home studio, this EP demonstrates Tatyana’s ability to fuse influences and genres in a coherent way and with personality. We had the opportunity to talk to her about the creative process behind this release, her influences and her artistic vision.
From an early age, Tatyana Jane has felt a deep connection to music. Born in Cameroon and currently based in France, her music reflects an amalgam of genres, from amapiano to jungle, funk, bachata, Jersey, and drum & bass. This cultural and musical background translates into a rich and varied sound proposal that seeks to resonate deeply with listeners. Jane has been highlighted as one of the emerging artists to watch by DJ Mag, a sign of her growing influence in the music scene.
She has been forging her path through innovation and introspection. With deep roots in sonic experimentation, Tatyana has been noted for her ability to combine tribal rhythms and organic textures with precise synthetic elements. Her trajectory has led her to collaborate with a variety of influential artists and perform on key electronic music stages. With a passion for connecting emotionally with her audience, each piece of her work is designed to evoke deep and resonant feelings.
Creating at Home: A Nomadic and Enriching Experience
Working from her home studio has allowed Tatyana Jane invaluable flexibility. “I worked almost exclusively with my laptop, which allowed me to be mobile and create anywhere, anytime,” she says. This mobility not only facilitated her creative process, but also enriched her experience, giving her the freedom to capture inspiration in any environment. This nomadic approach brought a unique dynamic to her work, allowing her to experiment and adapt her beats in real time during her club performances.
Influences and Musical Evolution
Artists such as Overmono, Nick Léon and RHR have left a significant imprint on the sound of “Elixyr”. The ability of these artists to transform and enrich electronic music was a key inspiration for Tatyana. Her EP was gestated after a long period of experimentation, where she tested her beats in clubs, adjusting them according to the immediate reactions of the audience. This direct feedback was crucial in refining every aspect of the album, making it more immersive and authentic.
“Elixyr,” released on May 31, 2024 under the prestigious NAAFI label, is Tatyana Jane’s second EP, following her 2023 debut with “Clavaria Formosa”. This new work focuses on narrative sound design, with unexpected arrangements and elements that create an immersive listening experience.
Infernal Circle: The EP opens with “Infernal Circle,” a track that combines downtempo vibes with club energy. Jane meticulously worked on the bass and kicks, creating a deep and solid foundation, while experimenting with melodic synths that add an ethereal touch to the composition.
Crossing ft. DJ Fucci: The second track on the EP, “Crossing,” features a collaboration with DJ Fucci. This song stands out for its incorporation of unconventional sound effects and prominent percussions, inspired by Mexican tribal influences, delivering hypnotic and deep rhythms.
Mapanes: Considered the EP’s standout track, “Mapanes” mixes diverse influences, notably bass music. The repetitive bass line sets the pace, while the kicks are carefully emphasized for a pronounced presence. The percussions play a crucial role, oscillating between rave textures and techno beats.
“Elixyr” is not just a collection of club tracks; it is an exploration of deconstructed tribal sounds, constantly breaking mid-tempo beats, and a mix of influences including drum & bass and techno. This combination creates a perfect testament to how electronic music is produced, listened to and experienced today.
Emotions and Home Production
The home environment also deeply influenced the EP’s emotionality. On the track “Crossing,” Tatyana incorporated her son’s voice and a bell from one of his toys, adding an intimate, nostalgic touch. “Working from home forced me to use what I had on hand, which brought a special warmth to the music,” she explains. In addition, this proximity to personal elements added a layer of authenticity and emotional connection, allowing each track to reflect a fragment of her daily life.
Choice of Equipment and Production Details
Genre exploration is an integral part of her creative process. For the opening track, “Infernal Circle”, Tatyana reused tracks from her song ““Sagatte” from her first EP “Clavaria Formosa”, transforming a loop into a rhythmic, downtempo loop that reflects the evolution of her creative process. She used Serum to create metallic and precise percussive elements, as well as others with a more organic quality, achieving a tribal fusion between synthetic and organic textures.
In terms of production techniques, She highlights the use of sidechain compression to make the track more rhythmic and dynamic, and a meticulous approach to sound design, creating custom sounds from scratch and manipulating samples to achieve the desired textures and tones.
The collaboration with DJ Fucci on “Crossing” came out of a creative synergy, where both artists shared ideas and energies to create a dynamic and emotionally resonant track. In addition, Tatyana has future collaborations in mind with artists such as Skrillex, Cookie Kawaii, Travis Scott, Kaytranada, Bambii and Shygirl, all offering new perspectives and opportunities to explore innovative musical horizons.
The physical environment plays a crucial role in Tatyana’s creative process. Although she works primarily from home, she collaborates with sound engineer David Cukier in studio sessions, where she can rediscover her productions in a dedicated environment. These sessions are fundamental to advancing her music.
The EP has been mixed by David Cukier himself and mastered by Imaabs, ensuring exceptional sound quality. Art direction is by Mexican Jihad, while the EP artwork was created by Simón Sepúlveda, based on her work “Latinos no pinten caballos” (2022).
Balancing her music career with her personal life and motherhood is a juggling act, but a rewarding one. Tatyana organizes her time meticulously, taking every opportunity to work on her music and maintaining open communication with her loved ones. Self-management and self-care are key to maintaining this balance.
Future Plans and Spiritual Aspirations
Tatyana plans to release a new EP before the end of the year, focusing on creating sounds that energize crowds and captivate listeners from the first notes. Her goal is to continue collaborating with artists from around the world, demonstrating how music can be a universal language that connects people across geographic boundaries.
Finally, although her compositions are not spiritual in the traditional sense, Tatyana strives to touch people through her music, creating meaningful and evocative experiences that resonate in the hearts of her listeners.
Tatyana Jane defines her project as a blend of dance and ethnic influences, creating emotional and immersive soundscapes meant to connect deeply with listeners. With “Elixyr”, she has achieved a perfect balance between personal experimentation and musical innovation, establishing herself as a prominent figure in contemporary electronic music.
Tatyana’s audience is diverse, united by a shared appreciation for the innovative soundscapes and emotions her music evokes. Positive feedback has been a constant source of motivation, driving her to explore and refine her style.
